Tooth Extractions
Sometimes, removing a tooth is essential for your oral health. At Excel Dentistry and Braces, we’re here to make tooth extractions, including emergency extractions, as smooth and comfortable as possible for a quick recovery.
Professional Tooth Extraction in Oklahoma City, OK
A tooth extraction involves carefully removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While our primary goal is to preserve your natural teeth, certain cases—such as severe decay, injury, or overcrowding—make extraction the best choice. Our team ensures extractions are efficient and comfortable, using anesthesia and offering sedation options to keep you relaxed throughout the procedure.

When is a tooth extraction necessary?
A tooth extraction may be required when a tooth is too damaged to be saved, whether due to severe decay, infection, or injury. Extractions are also common for impacted wisdom teeth or to make room for orthodontic treatments.
-
What can I expect during my recovery from a tooth extraction?
Proper recovery is crucial following a tooth extraction. Bleeding, swelling, and mild discomfort are common, and following aftercare instructions helps ensure smooth healing.
Bleeding
To control bleeding, gently bite on gauze over the extraction site in 20-30 minute intervals. If bleeding continues, place a tea-soaked gauze pad over the area and apply gentle pressure. Avoid physical activity for a few days, as it may increase bleeding.
Swelling
Applying ice packs to the outside of the extraction site for the first 72 hours can help minimize swelling. After three days, warm compresses can help further reduce swelling, which may last from several days to a few weeks, depending on the procedure.
Discomfort
Mild to moderate discomfort is normal after an extraction. You will likely be advised to take a combination of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil), which is effective for pain management without narcotics. If a stronger pain medication is prescribed, follow the instructions carefully.
